The Charlotte Chapter of the WVU Alumni Assn. was established 25 years ago by Ralph Newbanks. The Chapter has grown to be one of the most active and vibrant Alumni Chapters outside the state of West Virginia. To date we have over 140 dues paying members and over 400 email addresses.
The goals and objectives of the Chapter mirror those of the Alumni Association. They are:
(2) Recruiting students for WVU
(4) Community Service
Our Charlotte Chapter has endowed 2 WVU Scholarships. We have an endowed an Academic Book Scholarship that has reached a $19,000 endowment. This Scholarship provides $500 per semester to a qualifying student from North Carolina. This year’s recepient is James Farmer, a student athlete from Raleigh and a member of the WVU Men’s Swim Team.
Our Mountaineer Proud Athletic Scholarship was endowed in 2005 with a $25,000 scholarship fund. The current annual recepient is Maritza Paredes, a scholar-athlete from Mexico and a member of the WVU Women’s Swim Team.
Recruiting High Shool Students for WVU
Annually each spring we work with NARN to contact High School students in North Carolina (within 50 miles of Charlotte) that have been accepted to WVU. We congratulate them and encourage them to strongly consider attending WVU. It’s a great and rewarding experience to participate as a volunteer.
We also participate the in the Charlotte College Fairs for both the Private and Public Schools in greater Charlotte.
Be it attending a Monthly Chapter meeting or a social event or a community service activity, take the opportunity to meet fellow Mountaineers. We are Mountaineers helping Mountaineers in career changes, new job opportunities and mentoring of young graduates.
From support to the local hospice to a donation the Hokie Spirit Foundation after the tragedy in April, 2007, WVU Alumni and Friends care. In 2007 we also made a donation to the funds for the two fallen Charlotte Police officers.
